Description

Power Gig: Rise of the SixString will transport players to an entirely new universe, with its own mythology, politics, settings, heroes and villains, where music rules all. On the gameplay front, Power Gig uses new technology that represents the next evolution of music performance games to provide all players — from casual gamers to the hardcore, from those who have never before picked up a guitar to those who play guitar on a regular basis — with a more authentic and fun experience. The game offers two overarching modes of play. In addition to traditional beat-matching that will be familiar to fans of the band game genre, Power Gig also introduces the option to switch on chording, or chord play. Chording presents the added challenge of playing the game using chords that require specific finger placement on the strings. As players progress through the game, becoming more comfortable with a genuine guitar and potentially choosing to play real power chords, they will find that the byproduct of playing the game is coming away from it with an understanding of some real-life guitar fundamentals.

4Overall I like it, but could be improved.  Nov 04, 2010 By Adam Burns
I like the game. It is funny to really pluck the strings to your favorite songs. The guitar has some weight and feels like decent guitar. It is a 3/4 scale guitar, but when you are sitting on a lazy boy it feels like the perfect size. This guitar can be used on a real amp like a real electric guitar. This game has some great songs. In my opinion, Rock Band 3 and Power Gig beat Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock as far as the set list goes. This is fun when you get past the learning curve. This is also a great "experiment" to see if the kiddos will really try to learn to play guitar without buying them a $400+ quality guitar.

Now, time for the nitpicks. There is a major learning curve to this. If you have children or you yourself get frustrated easily and might throw a guitar then this may not be the product for you. The rock band 2 and lower as well as guitar hero use the plastic guitars and feel very playskool at times. The good thing about them is that when you are selecting the kind of note (color area) there is a little gap that you can feel with your fingers that lets you know I am going from a green to yellow. With a real guitar this note selection becomes much harder. There is no gap telling you you are changing colors. You have to take a mental note or look down to see. Another problem is the way guitars play the note. On the neck (slender part of the guitar where you specify the note) you have to press down the string till it comes in contact with this slender metal tab. Your fingers may be on a string in the green area, but you have to press that string down and it has to "TOUCH" the metal tab. If you don't press hard enough, full touch the tab, or let go of the tab and retouch the tab then you will be missing notes. I strongly suggest you play on easy for a few songs to get this neck figures out and slowly move up the difficulty. I am in no way going past medium since I will be pulling my hair out. When you get into to pinky music playing I screw up even on the plastic guitars. The song list is great, but I think a good 1/2 to 2/3rd's is locked. My favorite song Ignorance from the set list was locked. They do have a handful of good songs unlocked at the beginning, but not the wow songs. Gameplay wise it is fun when you get the strings down. The note display is fine, but not polished. It could use some color and design changes. The animations in the back are playstation 2 graphics at best. Very low resolution and quality. This is a mute problem for the player since there are hardly any gaps where you can truely watch the animation. I don't exactly care for Rock Band or Guitar Hero's animation, but it is nice they try to make it look hd(ish). I paid $120 for this game. I heard the mixed reviews and I was not going to pay full price. If you want the game and can wait, wait till after christmast when this thing will go on sale or the market will flood with parents trying to sell this product after their child finally quit because the strings were too hard for them.

This is a good game. You can use your plastic guitars on it and play the game fine. The appeal is the real guitar. Rock Band is coming out with a better full size real guitar, but that sucker is about $275 and it coming out in January. I do recommend this game, but only for someone how likes the songs and can stick with it. I would not pay full price at all. $180 is way too much for the quality and the few nitpicks this game offers. This holiday is flooded with great items. The playstation move on the playstation 3. Kinect that came out today. Definitely check out Kinect if you are looking for ideas. Power Gig is good, but check out Rock Band 3, Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock, or Dj Hero 2. Rock Band 3 is really good this year and much cheaper if you already have the guitar. Rock Band 3 does have a new semi plastic and string guitar this year, but it is $150. I would wait for the real guitar before buying that thing that has like 102 buttons on the note selection. Rock Band 3 does have a keyboard which is awesome if you like keyboards and want to semi learn and play on Rock Band. I hope this review helps. It is a B- game with a steep learning curve that will exist with almost all guitars. If you give it a chance and get to where you can strum accurately it is fun.

1Awful!  Oct 30, 2010 By mike chereches
I'm going to make this short. This game has to be the worst piece of garbage that I've seen in a while. The song selection is alright. It could be better. As for the guitar, the previous person stated, "the only real thing about this guitar are the strings". I have to add to that. The strings and the pick are the only thing real about this guitar. The graphics are Xbox 1 or Playstation 2 graphics. It doesn't teach you how to play guitar. It teaches you how to play some power cords but you really have no clue what your playing. You really have to press on the frets for it to realize that you are actually pressing on them. They claim that anyone can pick this up and play it. Even on easy it's not that easy. Don't waste your time with this thing. Get Rock Band 3 and wait for the Fender Squier to be released. Trust me. I purchased Power Gig and returned it back to the store telling them it defective. I didn't even want to waste my time selling it on ebay. Trust me when I tell you. Read other reviews and check out video reviews on the internet before considering this.

4Quite Surpised and Content with this Purchase.  Jun 17, 2011 By Saint305XL
I was at Big Lots a few days ago and my girlfriend and I noticed this game and it was $100 off. We thought it to be a pretty good deal and went home to find reviews. We found HORRIBLE reviews of this game and it didn't stop us from buying it once we realized there was a REAL guitar, not a toy one. As a matter of fact, we both think this guitar is 10 times (At Least) better than any other game controller out there. Yes, it is very hard to get used to and it is hard to play on certain songs, but man it works perfect as you can expect. The game is different, the graphics are a new interpretation to the genre of guitar games which in itself is appealing. Let's face it, all of these games are over-priced and all the same, there isn't much variation going on anymore. The guitar is what pulled us in because it was only $25, I'm actually getting a guitar for my birthday so this was an added bonus. I'm now able to play around with this and beat on it so I can learn accuracy and speed with finger placement and strumming, that is a great benefit to me since I don't want to ruin the guitar I have on the way. The songs on the game are pretty good, there aren't too many great ones, but previous guitar games have taken the greatest songs you could possibly put on there. There was some poor song choices because I think they could have done better, but all in all the game is fine, I enjoy it and I'm liking the practice this gives me before my guitar comes here next month. For $25 you cannot go wrong at all. I think this guitar is by far more superior to the Rock Band 3 guitar, that one is $275 and it doesn't even have strings all the way up the neck, ridiculous. Thanks to whoever made this awesome game and guitar, great innovative thinking man, I'd definitely buy this again and recommend this to a friend. Game 3 1/2 *, guitar 4 1/4 *.

3Prototype  Jan 05, 2011 By Trudat
It's not the worst game out there and it's a really innovative concept. There are a few things that, hopefully, will improve in future games for the SixString.

Such as:

better song list
whammy effect AND power up by shaking the guitar like guitar hero
more forgiving fret board
better audio

I have a decent sound system but even with guitar at the fullest setting in the option menu, still disappointed with the sound.

Also the fret board on the SixString in unforgiving. I'm pressing down really hard (especially on the power chords), and sometimes it still won't work. Even the single notes get picky, so I have to hold 3 strings with one finger for it to register...shouldn't have to do that.

It's not a total loss, this is after all a prototype and they can't achieve perfection the 1st go around.

4Guitar is under-rated!  Mar 20, 2011 By Jeffrey W. Davis
The game itself is better than the reviews would lead you to believe. I am more interested than function than form, and the game gets that job done just fine. I have not spent a ton of time yet with the Rise of the SixString game, but I didn't find it all that different from the competition or objectionable. I would say the graphics aren't "bad" but more in a different artistic style that is being interpreted as primitive.

Really, my primary interest was the guitar controller and I have mainly been playing the Power Gig guitar with Rock Band/Guitar Hero/Band Hero. I was intending to purchase the Rock Band 3 Fender Squier for the RB3 Pro mode, but the super low discounted price on the Power Gig made it worth a try first. Initially I thought I was settling - now I believe this was a great choice!

The guitar is suprisingly heavy! It is plastic, but it looks extremely cool and doesn't feel cheap. The frets have individual string pick-ups for all 6 strings in the positions for the normal 5 color controller buttons, plus a space (detected as a non-color button), then repeats again (unmarked) further up the neck. The controller appears to be detected as having the touch sensitive slide buttons as found on some of the Guitar Hero guitars, although I haven't fully explored this capability yet. You can play normally from either button position regardless. This is a nice feature that I'm not sure is documented.

The guitar as a musical instrument is pretty much a novelty. It does work, and it doesn't go out of tune instantly as I have seen in the other reviews; but it is inherently out of tune with itself. An open string tuning will leave you with a relative tuning that is off, and visa versa. i.e. the pitch change when you hold down a string is off; one string is off by almost a half tone. You kind of have to play a game with splitting the difference and detune some strings to minimize the overall error in pitch. I'm not sure if this could be corrected with some bridge adjustment.

As a game controller, it works very well; albeit a humbling experience. That hard/expert setting that you may have been playing on is not happening right away. If you are looking to develop some real guitar techniques, this guitar will certainly do that! You *must* develop real, useful guitar techniques or you will not be able to play this guitar successfully. There is a learning curve. Just repeatedly strumming a single string is a humbling experience for me. I can play some casual guitar... but strumming a string at the rates required for these games has been a real learning experience and is a real (tough) skill that will be developed. In fact, I am finding this more challenging than fingering!

One limitation I hadn't thought about before receiving the guitar is that with a stringed controller, it can't distinguish between an up and down strum. All strumming is detected as down. This is unavoidable, but will affect some challenges in the other games that expect you to alternate.

A complaint that I have read is that this guitar will develop bad habits like fingering more than one note on the same string. This is actually very inaccurate. Although it is possible to do this, it is not going to get you very far. The guitar detects a string press by electrical contact of the string against the two frets adjacent to the note desired. Each fret is split into 6 electrical contacts so that different strings can be detected. Playing two adjacent frets on the same string will work fine; albeit bad technique. But if you attempt to play two notes on the same string intending to skip the fret in-between, it will necessarily make contact across all 3 frets. This forces you to play the two (or more) notes on different strings, developing good technique. The manual explains this, along with chord suggestions that will work best. This physical mechanism could theoretically allow for full finger/chord detection not unlike the Rock Band 3 Pro controllers - and it can detect some chords in-game. Despite that, it cannot be used as a Pro controller.

Granted, you are not playing the actual notes of the songs - although you can if that note happens to be available on the fret(s) required for play. Quite frankly, I quickly realized that I am not even close to ready to play the actual notes. Just picking any string on the required frets and strumming is challenging enough. I am developing accurate finger placement and picking techniques that apply directly to playing guitar for real. The guitar does give a fair assessment of when you are on and when you are off. It is not very forgiving on finger placement, which IMHO is not a bad thing since you will also develop accuracy.

Overall, I am extremely happy with this guitar and am very glad that I bought it. The fact that it is usable with all the guitar games is a definite plus over the RB3 Pro controllers. In fact, I am re-considering a Pro controller purchase at all.
