intense shooter with staying power Apr 09, 2009
By Rorke Haining I don't normally go for action games or games that require fast reflexes. My favorite genres tend to be adventure, puzzle, or strategy. But once in a while, a good shooter can really fit the bill. Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2 (GW2 for short) is a best of breed shooter that will appeal to experienced gamers whether or not they tend to like shooters. (I don't, however, recommend it for grandma who has never touched a video game.)
GW2 uses eye-popping, high-contrast graphics that pay homage to the likes of Asteroids and other 80s coin-op video games. Explosions and other visual flourishes are plentiful and brilliantly colorful. The normal audio is a pulsing techno soundtrack which fits perfectly. The combined effect is sheer intensity.
GW2 has no campaign mode, but does have 6 different modes of play, all of which are suitable for single-player, multi-player co-op, and multi-player competition. The modes are different enough to offer a good variety of experiences to the player. For example, in one mode, you have infinite lives and simply must rack up the highest score in 3 minutes, which is a great way for newcomers to learn the controls and enemies. In another mode, players face a fixed (non-random) set of steadily increasing challenges, which will appeal to players interested in optimizing their attack patterns. For the hardcore player, there is an extremely punishing mode that involves wave after wave of near death experiences. My personal favorite mode (which also seems to be the most popular mode online) is Pacifism, in which you cannot shoot at all, but must instead manipulate the enemies and lure them to their deaths via skillful piloting. Words fail me to describe how addictive Pacifism mode is, but if you enjoy this game at all, you'll likely be playing Pacifism mode for months. [UPDATE: I've been playing this for over a year now and still come back to it regularly!]
The variety of modes makes this game something you'll want to play longer than most other shooters, but the longevity is boosted further by its multiplayer capabilities. GW2 has excellent built-in leaderboard support; upon launching the game, you immediately see where you stand relative to your Xbox Live friends -- and if your scores are close, it can really kick in your competitive streak and push you to achieve new heights. (Leaderboards may require Xbox Live Gold membership.) But more importantly, GW2 features excellent local multiplayer. If you and 3 buddies are at one location sharing 1 Xbox 360, this is one of the best party games available on the platform to date. You can play co-operatively or competitively, free-for-all or in teams. In none of the multiplayer modes do you ever shoot one another directly; instead, when you want to compete, you do so by killing more enemy ships or picking up more powerups and getting a higher score. As you and your friends transition between game modes, the game will automatically retain a running total score for each player for the session, unless you want to reset it.
GW2 is not my favorite game, and it doesn't have a lot of depth. But it's a solid, intense shooter with staying power. It works well in sessions of 5 minutes or 5 hours, and I have consistently returned to it again and again for the past 6 months, both to show off the Xbox 360 platform to friends and just to play and re-play the awesome modes. (I was finally able to master the last achievement, meaning, the achievements are well-balanced stretch goals for players who are not experts at shooter-type games.) It's also one of my favorite party games for the Xbox 360. Shooter fans will love it, and fans of other genres will find it a good counterpoint to their normal fare. GW2 definitely earns the 5 stars and is definitely worth the money.

Brings life back into the "I beat your high score!" days. Apr 14, 2009
By James E. Ranshaw This is what games used to be about, getting the high score. While the games of old can still be fun, they are still old. Geometry Wars Evolved 2 brings back the good old fun in competition of beating your buddy's high score. The game looks fantastic and the controls are super responsive. You will be zipping around the screen with ease in no time only to find the game's complexity increasing at an alarming rate. Boom, then you die, and then you can't wait to try it again.
There are multiple game modes included, each of which have they're own unique techniques required to master them. My favorites are Pacifism, and King. The game is not too hard to "beat", but to get all the achievements and to get a decent high score is really hard. This is the type of game that you always get better and better at, so it is very addicting. Your buddies high scores sit right next to yours on XBL so it's really fun trying to beat them.

Must-Own Arcade Game Apr 14, 2009
By Jonathan Hale Lots of levels, different game modes, offline multi-player, and a great scoreboard to let you compete with friends. The only downside is that it doesn't have online multi-player, but maybe most internet connections just aren't fast enough to keep up with the speed of this game.
An awesome sequel with tons of modes Mar 28, 2012

"Gaming Guru"
The Good: 5 new game modes, Geoms help add to score, same great multi player and visuals
The Bad: Nothing else is really new, difficulty is still unforgiving, no online play
Geo Wars was THE first Xbox Arcade game back during launch and fans have been chomping at the bit for a sequel ever since. In Geo Wars 2 we get six game modes, new gameplay features, and the same awesome multiplayer. The game modes include Evolved which was the original game, King which has you moving to one of 3 circles that eventually disappear and you can only shoot in those circles, Pacifism which gives you no weapons and you have to move through gates that blow enemies up, Sequence which is a series of 20 levels that have certain "objectives" and if you die you move on to the next, Waves which has orange enemies that move horizontally or vertically in rows and you have to kill and dodge them, and Deadline which is where you have to kill all the enemies on screen in a certain amount of time.
All these modes are highly addictive and are done very well. A great game play addition are Geoms which are little green dots that appear after you kill and enemy and this increases your score easier. This really helps since it was so hard to get a high score in the first game. The graphics are pretty much the same, but they seem brighter and the colors are more full and rich in detail. The thing is you really don't need great graphics with this game it already looks like fireworks when you play so you don't want to get too distracted or blind.
The sounds are exactly the same, but that's not a problem since you can just listen to your own music really. The multi player is the same insane fun and with more modes it makes it even better. Overall the replay value on this game is higher since there are more modes to master and different types of achievements to get. The game is still insanely hard though and that can be a problem for a lot of people, this game is just not very forgiving and that's why I won't give it a 9. Overall for $10 (800 MSP) this is a steal and everyone should also check out the first game as well.

Addicting Aug 21, 2009
By webhead This 360 game falls more along the lines of the old-school Astroids games. Its very addicting and with the add-on of rankings throughout LIVE and your friends, you'll be playing for a long time. There are also 6 modes which all feel like different games so there is added value there. On top of all that, you can play multiplayer co-op or versus on all modes. This game is worth every penny.
