This is an awesome collection of games. All together this 'game' or collection is perhaps the best game for current generation consoles IMO. Go ahead and laugh! This is because most modern games are not fun and lack gameplay. The only awesome game I've played from current generation consoles is Ninja Gaiden.
These are REAL games from the GOLDEN ERA of ARCADE. IMO some of these old games should be made modern! Imagine Forgotten Worlds in full intense 3-D spectular mayhem fashion on Xbox 360 and PS3. However 3-D can really kill games, this is evident in many remakes such as Castlevania LOI. IMO current generation consoles are not all that and playing 3-D games on a single TV screen just isn't all that. Im waiting for hologram consoles. Hey Billy Gates I know you can do it.
Looking at the preview screen shots gave me the impression that some games are console version from NES, SNES, etc... However Im glad to report that the games are arcade versions. Each game looks wonderful and comes with history info, unlockable art, tips, cast, and music. You can adjust the screen, difficulty, etc.... These games really test your reflexes.
Here are the arcade machines:
1942, 1943, and 1943 Kai. A vertical shooter. You shoot up Japanese WW2 planes, ships, etc... Great game(s).
Bionic Commando: A horizontal platformer. You swing across trees and kill enemies. So so game.
Commando: A popular vertical shooter. You are a charging marine. Great game.
Exed Exes: One of many excess shooters found in this collection. Okay game.
Final Fight: A super popular horizontal brawler. Great game. Similar to Streets of Rage.
Forgotten Worlds: A horizontal shooter. Futuristic, ancient and zany. Awesome background theme and graphic. You can buy weapons from a pretty blonde chick too. Superb game.
Ghosts 'n Goblins: A horizontal platformer. Cool medieval theme and monster design. Great game. BTW Recently I checked out an original Ghosts 'n Goblins arcade machine at an old pier amusement place, its made by Taito, lol and the graphic is hideous compare to the Capcom version on this disc.
Ghouls 'n Ghosts: A later version of the former. Great game.
Gun.Smoke: A vertical shooter. You are a cowboy in the old wild wild west. Great game. Excellent new button system.
Legendary Wings: A mythological vertical shooter. You have flying wings, cool Greek setting. Great game.
Mercs: Similar to Commando. Okay game.
Pirate Ship Higemaru: I never seen this at arcades. Horrible game.
Section Z: A futuristic horizontal shooter with 'metroidish' levels. Good game.
Son Son: A horizontal half platform half shooter. Simple but decent game.
Street Fighter II, SFII Champion Edition, and SFII Hyper Fighting: Biggest game ever from Capcom. Great fighter game. There is a two to three seconds of loading time between matches, its rather annoying.
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts: Third game of the series. Insane difficulty just like last two. Great game.
Trojan: Horizontal brawler. Metro ghetto setting. Great game.
Vulgus: Another vertical futuristic shooter. So so game.
Overall this is a MUST BUY for all REAL gamers. I urge younger generation games to give this a try. Thanks a zillion Capcom for making this game!

More Old School Classics that We Children of the 80's Just LOVE! Oct 16, 2005

Here is another great compilation of more old arcade coin-op games playable on the Xbox. For a mere $19.99 you can enjoy these 22 classic games at home, in their original arcade-perfect versions! The games presented here range from 1984 to 1992. For me, "Final Fight" was worth the price of admission all by itself, as I had not played this version since it left the arcades around 1992 or so. Ever since then I was stuck with the heavily censored SNES version, until now. The Super Nintendo version was missing an entire level called "Industrial Area" and also didn't even have Guy as a playable character! The sound effects were altered too, as well as some of the food items (beer and whiskey) and enemies (no women seemed to be allowed). But it's all here now in this version, so that finally makes up for it. The other games presented here include several variations of the "Street Fighter II" and "Ghouls and Ghosts" titles, as well as some other most likely forgotten games that Capcom must have REALLY had to dig deep in the archives to find. They are all worth playing, though.
As a previous reviewer pointed out, these games are most likely NOT for the teenagers of today. Most of them are too young to remember or weren't even BORN yet when most of these games were gracing the arcades. The kids today would undoubtedly regard these games as "dumb" or something. I just have to shake my head in mild wonder when I see kids look at "Namco Museum 50th Anniversary" and yawn with boredom over "Pac-Man" and "Ms. Pac-Man" presented there. Not having suffered through the days of the Atari 2600 like myself, they just can't appreciate having these classics in original arcade versions at home like I can. But for those of us who remember them and enjoyed playing them back in the day, this CD will undoubtedly provide you with some very fun nostalgic entertainment.
One tiny complaint that I feel like mentioning is the absence of a little-known gem (for me, anyway) from 1987 called "Tiger Road." I was hoping it was buried in here somewhere, but it is nowhere to be found. But, since Capcom calls this "Volume 1" I will cling to the hope that more compilations will follow and it might be included there. A future CD will most likely include the also omitted "Super Street Fighter II." Until then, I hope you all enjoy this first edition as much as I certainly will!

I'm old enough to remember when most of these games came out, so I was excited to see how well they ported over to x-box.
THE GOOD:
This collection has a number of great classics such as street fighter II, 1942, Final Fight, and ghosts and goblins. It also includes variations of those classics which were also released (1943, SFII Hyper edition, and Ghouls and Ghosts). Besides these games - which really can be called classics - the collection includes some other games which were fun, but nothing special - Mercs, Commando, Trojan, and Gunsmoke for example. These were games worth playing, but easily forgetable. This collection also has an option to clean up the graphics and sounds on some of the games, so you can play the original in a slightly tweaked version. Of course, you can play with the original game version if you're a purist. There is also an option to read a brief snippit of history for each game.
THE BAD
For the most part, what you see is what you get. With next gen-counsels coming out soon; these games look more and more obsolete. The only beef I had with the porting was with Street Fighter. The game load times is ridiculously long for a game that's almost 15 years old now. The controls also feel sluggish unresponsive, not at all like the original controls for SFII.
THE UGLY
This collection contains "classics" that no one in America remembers. "Son Son", a side-scrolling shooter that came out in the early eighties is just one example. It also contains such throw-aways as Vulgus, Pirate Ship Higaru, and Exed Exes. These games lacked any innovation and were better off forgotten.
For $20 or so, this game is a fun distraction from the otherwise stagnant video game market. The games are fun to pick up and play for a few minutes, but they are all beatable or boring after twenty minutes or so. If you're hankerin' for some old school video games, this is a pretty good package. If you're too young to remember any of these - you probably won't like the collection.

Exactly what the title says...a collection of classics. And who doesn't love a good classic every once in a while?
This collection of games made for a modern XBOX is a dream come true, allowing you to access all of the games you used to love back in the day but without the difficulty of finding them or trying to get them to play.

To be honest I bought this game mainly for Final Fight. I was unfamiliar with alot of the other games aside from Gun smoke, Final Fight and The Street Fighter games that are included. But there really isn't a bad game in the bunch. I'm becoming a fan of these compellation titles as there is a great more variety (obviously.) then there is on single game disk.
