| | Description | Arkham City is an open world action video game that incorporates elements of stealth and predator tactics. All of the gadgets previously obtained in the first game are present at the start of Arkham City (with the exception of the Ultra Batclaw, which is replaced with the regular Batclaw and Sonic Batarangs). Most of them have improved or new capabilities; for example, the Cryptographic Sequencer can also track signals, the line launcher now has a feature that allows Batman to flip over and launch another zipline perpendicularly across, switching directions, the remote control Batarang now has a built in brake and boost, and the grappling gun can now be used while gliding to boost Batman further up into the air. Four additional gadgets have been revealed: smoke pellets to confuse armed enemies when spotted by them, the Remote Electrical Charge which is a sniper-like taser gun used to power generators and shock enemies, ice grenades used to freeze enemies and make pathways through water, and a balled rope for tying up enemies. The game incorporates more puzzle elements; the use of Batman's "Detective Mode", which highlights elements such as enemy skeletons and clues on-screen, is used to perform forensic activities such as tracing the origin of a sniper round. | |

Batman Soars in Arkham City Oct 18, 2011
By Tiger CK Batman: Arkham Asylum was outstanding; its sequel Batman Arkham City is quite simply one of the greatest video games ever conceived. It combines a great character and villain with beautiful graphics, a good story and exciting game play, creating a genuinely unique gaming experience.
Synopsis and Premise: In Batman: Arkham City a section of Gotham has basically been turned into a giant prison for the inmates of Arkham Asylum who can prowl the streets but not leave. In the beginning of the game Bruce Wayne is kidnapped and dragged into Arkham City by Hugo Strange who seems to have masterminded the city's creation. The super villains contained in the city are attacking and killing each other and Batman has to find out what is at the bottom of this.
Production Values: The production values for Batman: Arkham City are pretty much in a class by themselves. They do a better job of bringing the Batman and his world to life than almost any other game, cartoon or film with the possible exception of the Christopher Nolan Batman films. Kevin Conroy reprises his role as Batman and Mark Hamill returns as the Joker (he has likely now become as famous for playing the Joker in cartoons and video games as he is for playing Luke Skywalker). All of the villains in the game look as sick and twisted as they ever have in the movies or the comics. Gotham City is remarkably well detailed with its gothic architecture and dark nightscapes. Even the musical score is stunningly appropriate for the game. My only complaint here is that there are so many villains in the game that not all of their roles and characters are fully developed. But this is a minor complaint given the scope and purpose of the game.
Gameplay: Batman's main objective in this game is difficult and there are many side quests in the form of challenges left by the Riddler that will likely occupy gamers for a long time. You can spend hours looking for tiny and relatively meaningless trophies. Solving quests and defeating opponents earns you experience points. It is not too difficult to accumulate points as you move through Arkham City. As you accumulate points you can add or upgrade Batman's weapons and gadgets.
The controls are somewhat complicated and I am still getting used to all of the new things that Batman can do. Like in Arkham Asylum, one button strikes, one button jumps and one button counters. But there are also a large variety of multipliers and combos that enable Batman to do an impressive and fun array of combat maneuvers.
In Arkham City Batman gets a terrific array of new toys such as smoke pellets that enable him to sneak away from opponents, ice grenades and a new version of the cryptographic sequencer. Some of Batman's toys from Arkham Asylum have also been improved and can do more. The line launcher has new a new feature that allows Batman to flip and change directions. Moreover, players can now use the grappling gun when Batman is gliding enabling him to get higher up in the Gotham skyline. There is a way to use almost all of these weapons during fights. Again, players have to learn how to use some of these features but once they do they will find that Batman is capable of an astonishing range of motion.
Batman: Arkham City also allows gamers to play as Catwoman who has her own separate storyline. She has her own weapons and moves and fights quite differently from Batman. She feels lighter and more agile than Batman but not as strong or powerful.
I have only one caveat about this game and that is that it is definitely not meant for the inexperienced game player. The game often requires you to produce a particular gadget or weapon to deal with a specific situation or defeat a particular foe. And as you play along it becomes harder and harder to keep track of everything that you have accumulated. Sometimes the game gives you a reminder or clue about what to use. But I think the complexity of Batman's mission and his equipment might be a bit frustrating to a new or relatively inexperienced gamer.
Conclusion: Rocksteady has created an expansive and challenging game with Batman Arkham City. It sets a new standard for superhero games and single player games. If you play it for a little while you will almost feel like Batman.

Awesome Game, Install the Catwoman DLC before you start playing however Oct 18, 2011
By M Blankenship
"Ian B"
Im gonna keep this review short since my fellow reviewers above me have said about everything. I love this game, it is everything Arkham Asylum had and more. I do want to stress the importance of installing the Catwoman DLC before you start playing as her parts are intertwined with the Batman Gameplay from the beginning. Its not like you beat Batman's story then install her DLC and play it seperately. Other than that the Setting is Dark yet inviting. The combat is flawless and super addicting, and there are TONZ of side missions and riddler trophies to be found. Batman fanatic or not, anyone could find something from this game to have a blast with! Pick it up!

Top Notch Game Oct 18, 2011
By OoAK Alright, I received my game early this morning and just finished a roughly six hour session. In that amount of time you would think I accomplished some type of milestones, but truthfully most of that time was spent just running around exploring the city and beating up some random thugs. I didn't realize how much fun I would have in this game just grappling around rooftops, swooping down and taking out a gang of henchman over and over again. If you've played Arkham Asylum, you'll feel right at home with the combat system and it's still fun as ever making Batman take out a group of 10 or so thugs by himself. The inclusion of Catwoman is a nice addition, and she's just as fun to play with as the bat himself. The opening credits scenes are fantastically done setting you up for the epic time ahead. Voice acting is, of course, very well done. Characters look great, the overall city looks great, and so far the story is definitely keeping me interested. The only complaint I have for this is that so far, and it doesn't look like it's going to come to be, is that you still can't drive the batmobile. Also, I would've liked to have been able to have a small part of the story playing as Robin & Nightwing like they did with Catwoman since they're usable in the challenge maps. But, overall i'm very happy that I bought this game. I played through Asylum 3 times, and i'm sure this one will get multiple playthroughs as well. Bottom line: If you enjoyed Arkham Asylum, you will enjoy Arkham City, because it attempts to expand on it in every way possible and succeeds in doing so.

Batman Meets GTA Oct 25, 2011
By Nobody This is honestly one of the best games I have ever played. It's a little like the old Spiderman games, but 1000 times better. If Rockstar studios made a GTA with the main character as Batman, this would be it. The combat system is dynamic, the movement is fluid, the graphics are gorgeous, and the story is unparalleled. Is there anything else I need to say for you to buy this game? If you are on the fence, it is a must buy and is in contention for game of the year. This game is everything one could have dreamed it to be.

As near perfect as you can get Oct 23, 2011

To this day, I still think Batman: Arkham Asylum has some of the best pacing found in a videogame. Others that rival it can include Uncharted 2 but for a game that wasn't likely to be a good game, imagine most people's surprise when it turns out not only was Arkham Asylum a great comic book game but a great game in its own right. So when Arkham City was announced a mere 4 months after its release, the skepticism returned. Was the first game a fluke? Would it be the case of indie darling followed up by bloated blockbuster sequel? And the large amount of villains announced meant Arkham City could potentially be a bit too...."stuffed". And again skepticism is unwarranted because somehow, Rocksteady made a game that I can't even find a legitimate complaint about. Unlike Mortal Kombat and its online lag and enemy AI and Deus Ex with its boss battles, nothing in this game hurts it. There's no "well I'd like to love the game if it wasn't for..." things in this game. Batman: Arkham City is as close to a perfect game and I still can't figure out how they did it.
Taking place a little after Arkham Asylum, the former warden of the asylum, Quincy Sharp, is now mayor of Gotham City and has walled off a section and dubbed it "Arkham City". A place where criminals can roam about freely with no jails, schedules or guards and pretty much anything goes. Unfortunately, Bruce Wayne has also been thrown in and after escaping and donning the Batsuit, Batman must now deal with not only the regular criminals that have been thrown in but familiar faces from the rogue's gallery has he figures out what exactly is going on and what is "Protocol 10".
Unlike the slightly-open-but-mainly-linear progression of Arkham Asylum, Arkham City is more open-world a la Assassin's Creed where Batman can go wherever he wants and it's up to the player to determine what they feel like doing. Thankfully the world is not only big but dense and packed with detail and sidequests to do so there's never any idling. In fact, one can go through the entire game and not know certain things were even in the game. From villains having their own missions to Riddle trophies and puzzles to solve and the main quest, Arkham City should take you a fair amount of time to complete and a New Game+ option certainly helps. And just like Arkham Asylum, City is a beautiful game with its gothic overtones, moody lighting and having it entirely played out in a snowy night, this game is really something from an art design standpoint.
When not using gadgets and stealth at your disposal, Batman goes into one of the funnest and fluid melee systems around. While it might be easy to just "button mash", getting high scores and getting a higher combo multiplier requires a bit more finesse. From dealing with armed henchmen, to ones carrying riot shields and stun rods, the dynamic combat allows for a visually cool and satisfying feeling when you go a long period of time without making a mistake. While the constant camera rotating can make it a bit frustrating and mashing the counter button only to get hit anyway occasionally rears its ugly head, playing as Batman is always bad ass. The gadgets are also fun to use and old favorites like exploding gel return while some new ones such as disruptors for firearms and mines and an electric projectile gun makes for creative combat uses and nice puzzle implementation.
Included with new copies (or a 10$ purchase for used owners), is Catwoman who handles a tad differently than Batman. Unfortunately her missions in the storyline are oddly brief but she's quite fun to control and her seamless animations are quite something. Other villains show up as well from a near unrecognizable Nolan North (but don't worry, he's all over this game) as the Penguin to Mr Freeze to Two-Face and some other surprises, Arkham City manages to pack a lot of secondary characters without making the game bloated. Incredibly well-voiced and managing to be worthwhile to encounter without sacrificing the thrust of the main campaign, it pays to explore the city's every corner. However, not all is rosy as some villains make some common appearances while others such as Poison Ivy might as well be cameos are not included at all considering how brief they feel.
Like Arkham Asylum, this game doesn't have multiplayer per se but it brings back the combat challenges and predator challenges. In the former, it's you as either Batman, Catwoman, Robin (Best Buy preorders) or Nightwing (future DLC) as you take on a large group of enemies while you compete for high scores. It's here where the combat excels and with different gadgets to use, each character handles different enough yet Batman tends to be the easiest to use. The predator challenges are where you have to stealth your way through a map and accomplish certain goals such as silent takedowns from a ledge, up above, from below etc. They're not as fun as the combat ones but they break up the pace a bit.
With promise of additional DLC and a lengthy campaign in its own right in addition to the challenge maps, Arkham City gives more than a bang for your buck and it's especially worthwhile if you're a Batman fan or just comic books in general. It lacks the out-of-the-blue surprise of Arkham Asylum but add this one to game sequels being better than the original.
